National Road Safety Charity takes to the track as Grand Prix season starts - 30/03/09 |
As Lewis Hamilton stepped up to retain his title at the Melbourne Grand Prix on Sunday (29th March 2009), a national charity devoted to lowering the numbers of deaths due to poor driving on Scottish roads raised nearly £3,700 at an event at Scotkart in Cambuslang.
Over 65 people took part in the second Brake Grand Prix at the indoor karting track. The money raised will go towards activities to educate the public about road safety and to care for the families and victims of road crashes.
The eleven teams, each with six people, competed with one kart each to see how many laps they could complete in an hour and a half.
Organiser Jim Lafferty said, “Everyday on British roads nine people die and almost ten times that are injured. We need to do everything we can reduce the number of people killed and injured on our roads. The fundraisers did a magnificent job and all the money will go to saving lives.”
Stewart Matthews, Managing Director of Scotkart, said, “Encouraging safe and responsible driving is important to all the staff at Scotkart. Motorsport is about control and skill. It is not about pressing the accelerator from start to finish. Brake is an important charity with a message all motorists should pay attention to.”
Lorraine Hart, Scottish Fundraising Manger for Brake said ''These events are so important to Brake as they not only raise vital funds for us but they also help to raise awareness on road safety within local communities. Road safety is an issue that affects us all whether driving, walking or cycling. Big thanks to Jim Lafferty for all of his dedication and hard work organising this event and £3,700 will really make a difference to helping us with our life saving work.”
